Quick Facts About American Silver Eagles

The American Silver Eagle (ASE) is the standard bullion coin issued by The United States Mint.  They were first issued in 1986 and are still minted today.  That includes 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023.  All silver eagles have the same design showing this text:

In God We Trust, United States of America, 1 OZ. Fine Silver, One Dollar

These were never circulated, so the stated dollar value is really meaningless.  These trade based on their silver weight, or occasionally, their collector value.  The designs are all the same.  Each coin shows lady liberty and an eagle with shield.  We most frequently see these types of eagles:

Monster Boxes – These are the huge and heavy 500 count boxes of silver eagles.  The boxes are almost always green.  If there is a white strap around the box, do not cut it.  An originally strapped box sells for a small premium.

Tubes – A tube refers to an original green lid or orange lid roll of 20 coins.  If you have tubes, no not open them or mess with the coins.  Sometimes tubes sell for more than individual coins.

Proof Silver Eagles Coins – Proof coins were originally marketed by the mint in a navy, dark blue, or burgundy box.  These should be complete with cardboard box, felt clamshell case, paperwork, and the coin in a hard plastic capsule.  Again, don’t open these up and mess with the coins.  Keep the packaging as original as possible.  These proof coins are selling for more than standard silver eagles.

Graded Silver Eagles – PCGS and NGC have graded millions of American Silver Eagles.  They have all types of designations like first day of issue, special signatures, reverse proofs, burnished finishes, etc.  Sometimes these things matter, often times they don’t.  We can tell you what is what.
